November has been a month full or reasons to be thankful for our family and one of our biggest and newest reasons to give thanks arrived on the night of November 27th!

I am so happy to introduce our newest little boy, Riley James!

He was born on November 27th, 2012 at 11:47pm

He weighed 8lbs, 15oz and was 21" long

He is a blessing and a joy!

This was such a special way to wrap up the month of November! I am in so much awe every time I look at our new little baby boy! 

I hope that all of the readers here on The Little Hedgehog and all of the readers over at The Pistachio Project have enjoyed the Bumps to Babies event. Brittany and I had such a great time joining up to host this event together as we both waited for our new bundles of joy!

November has been an amazing month and I feel so thankful and blessed to have two wonderful sons!

Who knew other brands of nursing pillows weren't green or eco-friendly? I had no idea! I always thought that they were just cotton stuffed into a half doughnut form. But it turns out that there is a huge difference in the make-up and design of the San Diego Bebe Eco-Nursing Pillow vs the other nursing pillows on the market. I didn't know that other companies even put those things in nursing pillows...I mean, it's a pillow! I was sent the San Diego Bebe Eco-Nursing Pillow in Butter. I love the soft yellow minky fabric and it matches our new little baby's  room! As soon as I took the pillow out of it's bag, I immediately knew I would love it! It had so many features that I always thought were lacking in my previous nursing pillow. My two favorite features are definitely the back pillow and the dual pockets. When I was nursing little man, I had a hard time making sure that I was sitting up properly. I would often realize that I was slouching and that usually led to difficulties with latch or comfort on my back and neck. Pockets were always something I wished I had with my previous nursing pillow too! It is perfect for keeping a bottle of water, snacks and my phone within reach. I had the hardest time eating enough food and drinking enough water- partially because I would sit down to nurse and realize that everything I needed was too far from my reach and I didn't have anywhere to keep it stored for handy access.

I also really love how thick the pillow is. I think that this feature paired with the bolster along the edge is the perfect support for little babies. The thickness is great for me, because I never felt that my previous nursing pillow could keep little man up high enough. I felt like I needed to bump it up with extra pillows to keep him close to me. The thickness of the San Diego Bebe Eco-Nursing Pillow is much better and it has the perfect firmness to keep baby steady. The last feature that I ended up loving more than I thought I would was the privacy cover. I really like that it is detachable, for when I am at home and don't need the extra privacy. But, when I have friends or family over or am out somewhere, I love that it is such a secure fit (it's not sliding off or getting pushed aside by baby) and it is a nice breathable material. My Pregnancy Journal: 39 Weeks

I've been linking up with the “My Pregnancy Journal” meme over at Happenings of the Harper Household. She has since had her little girl (Yay!), but I still wanted to continue to keep a pregnancy journal. I'm excited to keep  sharing and journaling some of my weekly symptoms and photographing my growing belly!

  39 Weeks!

 Today is my official "due date"! I'm at the end of 39 weeks! I made it all the way to my due date and our little guy seems as snug as a bug. At  39 weeks, our little boy is still growing and should be somewhere around 6.2 to 9.2 pounds and measures about 18.9 to 20.9 inches. Fruit-wise, he's about the size of a watermelon...and it definitely looks like I have one smuggled under my shirt! Our little guy is probably still able to flex his limbs, especially since my midwife said that he still has plenty of room to move around! He is still rolling and kicking too...goodness he sure is active when he's awake! His brain is also still rapidly developing and he's just getting smarter and smarter! Keep cooking little boy, mommy's just playing the waiting game now!

 

 About me & baby boy this week….

Symptoms:  I am still having Braxton Hicks contractions (or are they just contractions at this point?) that and they make my whole stomach tighten up. But, they aren't strong enough or consistent enough to start counting yet. I'm also getting a crampy feeling occasionally (mostly in the evenings), but it comes and goes. I had a major nesting burst this week and we got the nursery almost completely done! 

Weight Gain: I am at 165.1lbs - I lost 3lbs from last week!  

Cravings: Not too much. Thanksgiving dinner and leftovers have been a nice treat! I definitely still reach for foods higher in protein first. 

 

Food Aversions: No food aversions. 

What made me cry this week:  Hmmm... nothing! 

Medical Stuff: We went to the midwife's again this week and I had another great check-up. I tested negative for GBS! Hooray!!! I need my next test to also come back negative, then I won't have to have the antibiotic IV treatment during labor. I'm definitely praying for another negative test result! I didn't have the midwife check me at my last appointment. I figured they could check me again if I passed my due date. My midwife said that everything is progressing nicely. We got to hear our little guys heartbeat again and I know it won't be long before I won't be getting to do that anymore! I'm definitely trying to enjoy these last stages of pregnancy while I can!     

Thoughts from little man:  Little man talks more about his little brother as his baby! :) We also let little man pick out a small gift for his little brother - a onesie that says "baby brother" on it. Then we wrapped it together and set it aside to wait for when we bring his brother home and he can give it to him. :)

Something I am excited about: It is so nice to feel like the big pieces in the nursery are all set up! I definitely felt more relaxed. I still have some frames to hang and some "finishing decorative touches" to add...but I'm happy with where it's at if our little guy comes before I'm 100% done. I'm also so excited that I tested negative for GBS! Yay!

I didn't learn about babywearing until little man was about 6 months old or so. At the time I has a pouch sling and a carrier that I have since learned wasn't a good ergonomic choice for our little man's legs. Thanks Mama sent me a Planet Wise Wet/Dry Bag to review and I am in love! For those who are unfamiliar a wet bag is generally used to store dirty diapers whether at home or when out and about. Bumps to Babies: Hazelaid Review & Giveaway

One of the joys of having a baby is teething. Yes, I’m being totally sarcastic. Who in their right mind would enjoy the teething process? I’ve had 3 kids go through teething and I’ve never looked forward to it. Baby #4 will be no different.

However, while my poor boys (my oldest two) were given the standard non-crunchy Tylenol and orajel until they were hooked on the stuff, my daughter (#3) was spared all the drugs. Now how in the world did she or I survive teething without drugs? Simple, we got her a Baltic amber teething necklace from Hazelaid.

As crunchy as I might be, I was leery about a necklace that could work for pain relief. I mean seriously? How in the world could wearing a necklace make my baby cry less as she’s cutting her teeth? However, I was desperate and I wanted a natural remedy.

My daughter started wearing her necklace at around 3 months and she is still wearing it now that she’s 2 years old.  At first, I thought that it really wasn’t doing much. She seemed about the same. Then one night I forgot to put it on her while she slept (for safety reasons, it’s recommended to wrap the necklace on the baby’s ankle under a sock or jammies while they sleep). By 3am she was fussy and by the time it was morning she was a full-blown monster. What had happened to my sweet child? It took me a while to realize that she wasn’t wearing her necklace but once I put it back on her (after maybe a few hours) she was back to her happy self. I was sold! We have never taken it off of her since.

There was one greater test to put her Hazelaid necklace through…molars. Any parent will tell you that molars are the worst! When my oldest got his 1 year old molars, he got all four in one night, didn’t sleep for 24 hours straight and was drugged on Tylenol and orajel which didn’t seem to make a difference. My second son was not much different only that he didn’t get all four in one night. I knew that when my daughter got her molars in, I could truly tell if Baltic amber teething necklaces worked or not. Sure enough she got her 1 year molars in and guess what! She got them in unnoticed!!! The only reason I knew that she had gotten the first one in was because I was checking out her mouth for one reason or another and there was a molar! The test was over, Baltic amber teething necklaces worked and they worked well!!!!!

A Bit about Baltic Amber:

Baltic amber works in that when worn it releases succinic acid. This succinic acid is absorbed into the bloodstream through the skin. This is how Baltic amber acts as a natural analgesic. Now the most popular reason to use Baltic amber does seem to be for teething but it should be noted that it’s also good for headaches, inflammation, and many other pain related issues. It’s also supposed to improve the body’s immunity which I don’t know if I can vouch for but it seems like my daughter has gotten sick a lot less than her brothers did at her age.

Why Hazelaid:

Hazelaid is of course just one company of many who sell amber teething necklaces. There are dozens out there. Bumps to Babies: Eddie Bauer Trail Hiker 3-Wheel Travel System Review & Giveaway

One of the items that is a general “must” when having a baby is a car seat. Yet another item that many feel is a “must” although not quite as necessary, is a stroller. Many companies have realized that these two things are wanted by parents and now offer travel systems, which include both the stroller and car seat in one big package.

Eddie Bauer is one such company. I recently received an Eddie Bauer Trail Hiker 3-Wheel Travel System and I must say I’ve been impressed!

The Eddie Bauer car seat is an infant seat, which is one of Dorel’s (whose brands include: Safety 1^st, Cosco, Eddie Bauer, Maxi-Cosi and more) top rated car seat. With it’s nice gender-neutral yet stylish colors, this car seat is sure to please any parent. The car seat comes with its base so you are all set and ready to install into your vehicle. It also comes with all the standard luxuries like the 5 point harness, level indicator, removable infant head support, LATCH, and so on. One of it’s great features is that it works as a rear facing infant seat from 4-35 lbs and up to 32”; that should get you plenty of mileage in just this one car seat!

The stroller is just as great. The stroller is designed in the same colors as the car seat so you can have a great looking set if you decided to snap in the car seat to the stroller for a walk. Easy to maneuver which is important when you are trying to steer a baby around a busy mall or crowded sidewalks. Comes with a child’s tray with a cup holder and a parent’s tray which has two cup holders and a covered storage area for keys, iphone, ipod, etc. You can recline the seat to pretty much any angle as it’s designed on a simple cinch system. This stroller has a nice sized storage basket underneath to hold that diaper bag, shopping bags, and anything else you might need to free your arms of. One thing I’m really grateful for is the adjustable handle. I am on the shorter side of things and not all strollers are built for me. The Eddie Bauer stroller has an adjustable handle so I can adjust it to where it is comfortable for me, however with just a click of a button I can move it so that my husband or someone else can push the stroller comfortably as well.

This truly is a great set and would make any parent’s day!
