What Does the Fox Say? Choose BabyKicks Diapers, of course! {Basic Pocket Diaper Review}

Ok, so maybe the fox doesn't have anything to say about cloth diapers. But, Riley and I sure do love this diaper!

I recently had the opportunity to review the BabyKicks Basic Pocket Diaper in the Limited Edition Outfoxed print with snaps. The BabyKicks Basic Pocket Diaper is a one size cloth diaper that fits little ones from 7-40lbs. This diaper comes with a soft microfleece inner lining that works to help keep baby dry. This diaper also comes with a super absorbent one size insert is made with 2 layers of microfiber that is made to absorb quickly and then there are 2 layers of  thirsty hemp terry on the other side. Another feature of this BabyKicks diaper is that it is a front stuffing pocket.

I have really enjoyed using this diaper with Riley. I am impressed that with how trim the diaper is. Riley is big enough that I only have to fold over the insert a little, so it doesn't add much bulk. But, I am sure on a tinier baby or newborn, you would have a bit bulkier of an insert to deal with stuffing into the pocket. One thing that I noticed is that this diaper has a bit of a "high-rise" on Riley's little chunky butt cheeks. It's not a big deal, it's purely an aesthetic thing. The diapers elastic hugs his booty well and I haven't had any leaks (that's the important thing).

One thing that I really like is that the dual sided insert gives you the option to have the hemp's natural fibers against your little ones skin. You can choose to place the hemp side of the insert face side up and on top on the microfleece lining, rather than stuffing the diaper. I like this option, because I find it easier than stuffing the diaper. I have a bit of a hard time getting my hand and the insert into the diaper. (but that could just be me and my big ol' paws) Another bonus with the hemp is that you get all it's naturally occurring anti-microbial, anti-fungal, and anti-bacterial benefits!

Now, I chose to try out the snap closure for the Basic Pocket Diaper, but I have since read on the BabyKicks website that their Velcro versions have a slightly larger pocket openings and may be easier to stuff. They also may be a better fit on chunky babies. I definitely want to try the Velcro version out to compare Snaps vs. Velcro! I do worry that little Riley would be able to pull the Velcro closure open and be "nekkid" in seconds...so I will have to put the Velcro's "stickiness" to the test!

Wondering what to pair with pair with this diaper?
Styling your Babykicks Outfoxed Diaper is easy and fun with some fox-y tees, toys and accessories! Have fun with it, because really, who wants to cover up that adorable print!

1. Kids Fox Tee from Gnome Enterprises 2. fox wooden teether from littlesaplingtoys 3. Handmade Fox Pillow from Gingiber 4. Cordy Roy Fox from Jellycat 5. BabyKicks Basic Pocket Diaper in the Outfoxed Print 6. Iron on Fox Shirt PDF from ScrapendipityDesigns 7. Fox Toddler Shirt from Feather4Arrow 8. Fox Mox Leather Moccasins from Happy and The Hectic 9. Red Fox Tote Bag from Sass&Peril

Overall, I was really impressed with this diaper and what it had to offer. It had a nice trim and snug fit, it was soft and absorbent. There was the option to have natural fibers against Riley's skin and...no leaks! You can buy the BabyKicks Basic Pocket Diaper in the Outfoxed print or another print of color for only $16.50.

Best Cloth Diaper Covers & Fitted for Overnight

The last thing anyone wants is to wake up to is a wet baby with a leaky diaper. *insert sad face for both you and baby* Lately, Riley's night time cloth diaper situation has been less than ideal. When Riley would wake up to nurse in the wee hours of the morning, I would inevitably feel that his jammies were wet. Then we had to do the please-don't-wake-up-while-I-change-your-diaper-and-pj's dance and then get him back to sleep. Well, I knew I had to figure out the best combo for our nights, so that Riley could nurse and get back to sleep in peace (and I wouldn't have to keep washing sheets!).

I tried a few different combos and what surprised me the most was that what had worked for Michael when he was a baby did not work for Riley. I think that because Riley co-sleeps with us, sleeps on his side and nurses (often) throughout the night, his regular night time diapers weren't holding up and the extra liquid would just leak out the side when about half of a pocket diaper with hemp insert was wet.

So, after some trial and error, I found two different solutions that have worked perfectly for Riley! My bullet-proof overnight combo are diaper covers and super thirsty fitted diapers!

After trying out a few of my different covers, my top choice for overnight (and fir use in general) is the Blueberry Coverall Diaper Cover and the Best Bottom Diaper Cover. My favorite thing about these covers is that they both have double gussets around the legs. That helps to keep the moisture on the inside and with the snug fit, it keeps Riley's jammies dry. One added bonus to the Best Bottom cover is that the PUL cover is 2 layers thick, so there is extra protection from wetness leaking through! Even though the Best Bottom system is designed to have a snap-in insert, I found that using a fitted diaper at night works perfectly and the snap button doesn't bother Riley. Both diaper covers are made in the US, come in lots of fun colors and prints and with all the snaps, there is plenty of rooms to adjust. What's not to love?!

Now for what's on the inside of the cover! I think what you choose to use on the inside of a diaper cover is super important. My favorite fitted diapers are the Sustainablebabyish Snapless-Multi Fitted Cloth Diapers and the Bamboozle Fitted Diaper by Tots Bots. The Sustainablebabyish fitted is made from organic bamboo/cotton terry material and comes with two boosters! This is my absolute favorite and a super thirsty diaper. I have never had a leak with this fitted! The Bamboozle is made with bamboo and has a hidden microfiber core, plus it comes with an extra snap-in insert. This has also been a super trusty fitted for night time and I always get a great fit with it.

There's Riley (above) in his Blueberry cover with the Sustainablebabyish fitted ...all fresh, clean, ready for his pj's and ready to wake up dry in the morning! Yes, the diaper combo is bulku, but hey, it works...and that's what matters! I think that the fitted diapers work really well at soaking up the wetness as Riley nurses throughout the night. I also think that the material lets the liquid "evenly distribute" throughout the fitted, rather than just pooling on one side. That, paired with the diaper covers that fit really well and have double gussets, have proven to be a leak-free overnight solution for us!

What is your "go-to" overnight cloth diaper solution? Do you use fitteds and/or covers?

Oatmeal, Chocolate Chip & Walnut Milk Makin' Lactation Cookies

At the Big Latch On event that I went to at Granola Babies on the 2nd, there was a Lactation Cookie exchange that Giselle organized! To prepare, I tested out multiple lactation cookie recipes and blended a few different recipes together to make my favorite Milk Makin' Cookie recipe! Testing out so many recipes was fun and I have a well stocked fridge and freezer! I love "treating" myself to a few cookies every day and knowing that the ingredients have some potent milk production boosting power!

I hope you enjoy these cookies as much as I am! Here's the recipe:

Oatmeal, Chocolate Chip & Walnut Milk Makin' Lactation Cookies

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons flax seeds
  • 4 tablespoons water
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/3 cup coconut oil (Can use molasses or butter in its place)
  • 1 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups whole wheat pastry flour (Can use all-purpose or a flour alternative in its place)
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 12 fenugreek tablets
  • 3 Tablespoons Brewer's Yeast
  • 3 cups oats (NOT instant oats!)
  • 3/4 cups dark chocolate chips
  • 1/4 cup walnuts

Directions

Preheat oven to 350.

Combine the flax seeds and water in a small bowl and set aside for 3-5 minutes.

Cream the butter, brown sugar and coconut oil together. Add eggs one at a time and mix well. Add in the flax seed and water mixture and the vanilla extract. Blend in well.

In a separate bowl, sift together flour, baking soda and salt. Open 12 fenugreek capsules and dump the powder into the mixture. Add in Brewer's Yeast and sift together.

Add the dry mix to the wet sugar and butter mixture. Mix. Add in oats, chocolate chips and chopped walnuts. Mix thoroughly.

Drop cookie dough by rounded spoonfuls onto baking sheets.

Bake for 12-14 minutes, depending on size of cookies.

Enjoy 2-4 cookies per day! : )

I just love this picture and moment that Alison captured from the Big Latch On! {credit: Alison Bernier Kids Photography // image source}

The nice thing about this recipe is that you can adapt it to suit your preferences and needs. Don't like walnuts? No problem! Just leave them out. Don't have brown sugar? That's ok - try regular sugar instead. I also used organic ingredients, but if you don't have organic ingredients, just use what you have in your pantry. Don't need these cookies to have quite so much milk makin' power- then you can add just the Brewers Yeast or the fenugreek (not both). I personally add both, since I definitely don't have a problem with oversupply and take supplements to help with healthy lactation supply as it is. Now, for me, I haven't found that these cookies boosted my supply in some crazy way. I'm know that all women respond differently to herbs and supplements, so for some, this recipe may be overkill! Haha!  I (personally) have felt "full" more often throughout the day, but I haven't needed to pump or anything after nursing. I feel that they do give me a pick-me-up and that they are an easy and tasty way to get some extra supplements into my daily diet.

Do you have a favorite lactation cookie recipe? Did you try this recipe? Tell me what you think!

How I Celebrated World Breastfeeding Week - The Big Latch On!

This week (August 1-7) is World Breastfeeding Week and one thing that I did to celebrate was to take part in The Big Latch On! On Friday, the 2nd,  I went out to Granola Babies in Costa Mesa, CA (about an hour away). I love the community at Granola Babies and head to the store to shop or take a class whenever I can!

This year's World Breastfeeding Week theme is "Breastfeeding Support: Close to Mothers". Support for mother's is so important from day one and continues on for as long as mama and baby decide to breastfeed. It has been so meaningful for me to have family and friends that surround me to encourage, support and cheer me on. "The key to best breastfeeding practices is continued day-to-day support for the breastfeeding mother within her home and community."

I was so happy to be able to take part in this years Big Latch On event! I remember this time 3 years ago when I first heard about this event and I was so wistful, because Michael was only 8 months old and our breastfeeding relationship had already come to an end. So, this time, when the event rolled around and Riley was still breastfeeding, I saw this event as a way for me to celebrate our journey. I am thankful that we have worked together to keep nursing. I am thankful every day that Riley is still breastfeeding.

The Big Latch On brought together local mamas, who at 10:30am, all started breastfeeding their little ones for (at least) a minute to help set a record! I was able to get there early and sit, chat and get to know some other mamas and their little ones. Riley and I had so much fun - he was smiling at everyone, playing with other babies and sharing his toys! I really loved being around so many other nursing moms and their babies!

Just before 10:30am, Giselle (the owner at Granola Babies), did a count down to start nursing. It was so funny to watch all of these babies trying to focus on nursing! There were so many other babies around that they didn't seem to know whether to nurse or watch what the baby next to them was doing! Haha!

This was such a pleasure to be able to attend. It was so relaxing and wonderful to nurse around other mothers who were comfortable feeding their babies in public - it definitely gave me a boost of confidence. My hope is that nursing in public will continue to become more natural and that eventually, no one will even bat an eye when they see a mama feeding her baby.

How have you celebrated World Breastfeeding Week so far? Have you felt supported or encouraged to nurse in public by anyone?

7 Months (a month late)

Well, Riley's 7th month just zoomed past! He is now officially 8 months and while I have already taken his 8 month pictures, I thought I should write about his 7th month first!

Riley is such a smiley little guy and he is so cuddly! He loves to hug and snuggle into your shoulder...and while he's there, he might as well chew on it! Haha! He also loves to wrap an arm around my neck and play with the hair at my neck. So sweet and...so painful at times. But I know I want to remember it and cherish it now!

Riley has a smile for anyone who will look at him, smile at him or make funny faces at him. He absolutely adores his big brother and little Michael can get some of the biggest belly laughs out of him!

Teeth. Teething. Drooling. Chewing. Gnawing. Fussing. Crying. All of these things have befallen poor Riley. Poor guy. His teeth are all just waiting to burst through his gums! When he opens his mouth, you can see his swollen red gums. Makes me so sad for him. He got his two bottom teeth in on the same day. Ouch! Then he got one of his lateral incisors (one next to his two front teeth)! Totally out of order. It's so funny though, because he looks like a baby vampire...haha!

Little Riley is loving his food too. So far he has eaten avocado, apple, pear, green beans, sweet potato, bananas, figs, nectarines, carrots and rice cereal. I have gotten a lot of his food at our local farmer's market! Love seasonal, local, organic food! Michael and I have had so much fun steaming and pureeing food for Riley. He also loves when I put some softer chunks of food (like avocado, banana, nectarine, cooked apple or pear) in his mesh feeder bag thingy. He goes to town chomping on it! Riley pretty much likes any food I will make for him, although green beans haven't been his favorite. Either way, he is pretty much always eye-balling whatever we're eating!

Riley is a real "talker" too. I'm sure he is trying to be just like his big brother and keep up with him. Riley has lots of "Da-da's", "Bwa-bwa's", "Gggggg's" and I even got a "MOM!" one day! (Squeee!) I love when he gets a real conversation going, "Bwa-bwa-bwa...da-da....ga-ga-ga...mmmmm-mum-mum...ggggg..." He always mixes in plenty of drool with these conversations too. Haha! Another fun thing that he has started doing is to wrap his tongue up and around his upper lip. It's so cute! For as much as he wants to talk and stand up, with help, he is not all that interested in tummy time or crawling! If you want to hear some mad grunts and yells, just put Riley on his tummy and try to encourage crawling...soon enough, you will hear his disapproval! Speaking of which, he does the most hilarious thing - when he's sitting, sometimes he will flex his arms downward and growl. (imagine the Hulk here) It's so funny to watch, because, Michael will imitate him and then it will just escalate as they're both growling and flexing! Haha...My little baby hulk.

7 months has gone by - 7 months of breast feeding (Yay!), 7 months of snuggling, 7 months of learning about little Riley, 7 months to watch him grow and 7 months to love my little sunshine.

The Ultimate Swim Diaper! AppleCheeks Swim Diaper Review & Nature Bumz Co. Sponsor Spotlight #summerfluffing

I am thrilled to have the opportunity to partner with Nature Bumz Co. for the Summer Fluffing giveaway hop! Nature Bumz Co. is a premier online shop and retail shop in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. At Nature Bumz Co., their goal is to provide the whole family with products that are safe, natural and organic. They believe in excellence in customer service as well as doing everything they can to make your entire experience at Nature Bumz Co. a great one!  Founder Crystal and her husband Brian opened Nature Bumz Co. together in October 2010 and they truly believe in the brands and products that they carry. They have used most of the products from their shop on their 3 children - so they have a lot of experience with these items! Talk about a great resource! How wonderful to have a shop where the owners have tried and tested such a great variety of cloth diapering and natural products! At Nature Bumz Co., their goal is to help you find the best products and answer your questions...whether it's about cloth diapering, green parenting or natural living!

Both the Nature Bumz Co. online shop and brick & mortar store are well stocked with cloth diapers, accessories, laundry detergents and more.  They are so passionate about selling natural & organic products and they want to find the best products for you and your little ones. At Nature Bumz Co. they truly care about customers.

Nature Bumz Co. was so kind to send me an AppleCheeks Swim Diaper in Totally Twilight in size 1 for little Riley. He is 18.5lbs and this swim diaper fits him perfectly! The AppleCheeks swim diaper comes in two sizes: Size 1 fits from7lbs-20lbs and Size 2 fits from 18lbs-40lbs.

This is such a cute and soft swim diaper! It is made with two layers of polyester mesh that makes the diaper move really well as Riley wore it. The mesh material is comfy, breathable and soft and lets the water move easily through the swim diaper. The mesh material, along with the elastic at the waistband and legs, keeps any solids out of the pool. (thankfully Riley hasn't christened this swim diaper...yet!) I was so happy that I was able to get such a great fit on Riley! With the snaps is is super easy to adjust the fit as your little one grows. I love the royal blue color of Totally Twilight and really, even though I could put board shorts on Riley, who wants to cover that cuteness up?!? I think Riley totally rocks the ruffled elastic too!

The AppleCheeks swim diaper has two rows of snaps and they are my favorite feature. It is soooo much easier to unsnap a wet swim diaper than trying to wrestle and tug and pull at a wet swim diaper that just pulls on and off. Those just seem to get stuck on little legs! I am also a huge fan love how soft and moveable the fabric is. I think that especially when you have a little one who can walk, this diaper will really move with them and be comfortable to wear. The fabric also has a very breathable quality to it that helps it to air dry quickly and it's nice and light - no weighing a baby down! If you are familiar with the AppleCheeks diapering system, you'll love their swim diaper just as much!

If you are headed to the pool or beach, this is the ultimate swim diaper for your little one!

You can shop online at Nature Bumz Co. for AppleCheeks swim diapers, as well as many other safe, natural, organic products for mom, baby and the whole family!
Do you live near the Niagara Falls, Ontario area in Canada? Then swing by the shop and you can pick up your order in person or just stop by to chat and get some questions answered!

Well Rounded Baby Sponsor Spotlight and Best Bottom Review! #MadeInTheUSA

Well Rounded Baby is both a boutique in Las Vegas, NV and an online store that offers cloth diapers, babywearing items and mama gear. I am thrilled that I got the opportunity to partner with Well Rounded Baby for the Made in the USA event! Well Rounded Baby offers many brands of cloth diapers and accessories that are made right here in the US!

I have recently started gravitating more towards cloth diapers that are made in the USA. I appreciate that these companies have chosen to source their materials and workers here, rather than overseas. I also appreciate the workmanship and time that goes into these products.

One of the Made in the USA brands that Well Rounded Baby carries is Best Bottom. I had never actually tried out the Best Bottom system before, so I was super excited when Brittany agreed to send me a cover and insert for Riley!

I fell in love with this diaper cover and insert as soon as I got them! Right away I noticed that there were double leg gussets and that the PUL material felt really thick and yet moveable at the same time. I love double leg gussets, because they hug little Riley's legs super well and make sure that wetness and blow-outs stay on the inside! Score! Plus, the inside is wipe-able, so you can use it again and again. The Best Bottom shell is actually made with a double layer of PUL. I don't think I have seen that before! The extra material gives the cover sturdiness and a feel of durability to it, yet it is still soft and little Riley seems super comfy in it. This shell definitely feels like it will last a very long time and stand up to plenty of use!

The snap in liners are great too! Seriously, the Best Bottom diaper system couldn't be easier! I really like that the inserts snap into place - no scooting around or shifting to one side! There are three different size options for the inserts as well as a stay-dry microfiber or organic hemp/cotton choice. Another feature that I really appreciate is that the snaps have a crossover feature, which is perfect for tiny and skinny babies. ...not that Riley has that problem! Haha! But when he was a newborn, I did have a hard time getting a snug enough fit around his waist and snap covers were just about fruitless to try to use. This would have come in handy for sure!

The Best Bottom system was created by a husband and wife team and it is a privately owned family company.  They don't scrimp at all when it comes to quality! I love this diaper cover and the stay-dry microfiber insert has been super absorbent! I definitely want to get some more inserts (maybe try the organic hemp/cotton next) and a few more covers! This is a well made cover and insert and I have been so impressed by the craftsmanship.

Taken from the Best Bottom website: "The highest quality of materials available have been selected with as much of the raw materials made in the USA as we could find. The entire Shell is made with USA-made materials! ALL of our products are proudly handcrafted in the USA at local factories helping to support the local economy and reduce our environmental impact. We use durable snaps and hook & loop, double layer of waterproof PUL creating a perfect no-leak sturdy shell with a wipe-able inside lasting for many washes."

How great is it that when you purchase a Best Bottom diaper, you know that you are helping to support families!?! Not only are you helping to support the family that creates Best Bottom, but by choosing to shop locally (if you are in Las Vegas) or through the family run online store, Well Rounded Baby, you are helping to support their family as well! Yay for Made in the USA!
