Getting Crafty!

We've been getting pretty crafty as of late! It's been so fun to make fun projects for little man to explore and create with. A little while ago, I was perusing the Magic Cabin website (love their imaginative toys!) and had seen this Teepee:

It reminded me of a similar, canvas teepee that my brother and I had growing up. It was awesome! We used that thing summer after summer until the canvas had deteriorated from being in the sun. Then we grew corn stalks around it and made a corn teepee out of it! (I think we did...but my memory is a little spotty on that one, so I may have imagined that we did that). Anyway, I thought that it would be awesome for little man to have a teepee, but at $125.00, it wasn't happening. I told my hubby to be on the lookout on Craigslist for a teepee!

Them I saw the GardeFort

I thought that it would be so cool in our side yard with vines growing over it! It would be a perfect place for little man to play in the shade as he got older. But again, at $70.00, we wouldn't be buying it.

Then, while we were working in the yard the other day, I noticed some big tree support sticks that we had pulled out from the tree in our front yard. We had just stacked them up, since we didn't know what to do with them. I had a light bulb moment and exclaimed to my hubby that we could use the four posts to make a Garden Fort for little man! I was going on and on about how we could dig holes for the posts and somehow get garden mesh wrapped around it...

Then my hubby came up with an even better idea (and much simpler) - we could make a teepee and put some green garden mesh around it! Perfect! Yay for brainstorming teamwork! So, we he got to work and took full advantage of little man's nap time!
Here's what we hubby did (I helped where I could, but he really did most of the work):

  • Decided where the teepee was going to have a permanent home.
  • Took 3 of the stakes and secured them together at the top with wiring.

  • Stapled green garden mesh to 2 of the 3 sides.

  • Planted creeping fig vines next to the mesh, so we could train them to grow up the teepee walls. (We picked these vines, partially because they don't get flowers and therefore, no bees!)
  • Enjoy!
Little man exploring his new teepee for the first time (and watering it)

Hmmm...interesting...kinda cool!

It will be so great to watch the vines grow up the sides as little man gets older! I hope that it will be a fun hideaway for him for years to come! ...of course, I think I may sneak in there every now ant then too!

Total cost of our crafty project: $0! We had all the materials and plants already - Yay!

What fun craft projects have you been working on?
