My Pregnancy Journal: 38 Weeks

Happenings of the Harper Household

I've been linking up with the “My Pregnancy Journal” meme over at Happenings of the Harper Household. She has since had her little girl (Yay!), but I still wanted to continue to keep a pregnancy journal. I'm excited to keep  sharing and journaling some of my weekly symptoms and photographing my growing belly!

  38 Weeks!

Little man was born at 38 weeks on November 12th. Our new little baby boy seems to be happy where he's at and is still in the oven! I'm glad- I'd be more than happy to have him stay on the inside until 40 weeks. So, at 38 weeks, baby boy is about 18.9 to 20.9 inches long and weighs about 6.2 to 9.2 pounds. That's a pretty big weight gap...I hope that he's closer to the lesser weight. :)  At 38 weeks, little man was 7 lbs, 14oz., so I am thinking that our new little guy will be in the 8lb range.
About me & baby boy this week….
Symptoms:  I still get nauseous on occasion, but I think I figured out that it seems to happen when the little guy is super active or when I let myself get too hungry. I still get Braxton Hicks and it mostly happens in the evenings, but sometimes I'll get a few contractions during the day for good measure. Also, our little guy is still super active and I still feel lots of kicks or knees in my side or the occasional punch toward my bladder! On that note, I also have to go go to the bathroom all.the.time! Other than that I am feeling pretty good still! Going to the chiropractor helps and I have been lucky to get some extra sleep-in time in the morning! I definitely get tired in the evenings, but overall I feel healthy and happy!

Weight Gain: I am up to 168.1lbs - I've gained 43.1lbs!

Cravings: Fruit, kefir and high protein foods are the most appealing to me and I can tell that my body really needs the high protein foods too.

Food Aversions: No food aversions really.

What made me cry this week:  I got a bit emotional thinking about how we were going to plan out our new little guys nursery. I felt like I couldn't make any decisions and at the same time, like I wasn't getting anything done! *Sigh*

Medical Stuff: We went to the midwife's again this week and I had a great check-up. Our little baby's heartbeat was super loud and strong! My midwife also checked me to see if I was dilated at all and I am! I am at 3+cm! Yay! I'm headed in the right direction! I was at 4cm when my water broke with little man...so, we'll see how much longer I have! We also went to a breastfeeding class at our midwife's office last night. It was so helpful! Even though I breastfed little man, that was almost 3 years ago, so I wanted a refresher course. ;) This was so, so, so helpful and I loved all the information that she gave us - it was all so practical and there were some great tips that I had never heard before.

Thoughts from little man:  Little man still goes back and forth between talking about his little brother to wanting to be a baby again and have his crib back!

Something I am excited about: Meeting our little baby boy! Sometimes I feel like it is going to be awhile and then sometimes I feel like he'll be here before Thanksgiving!

Bumps to Babies: Bebe au Lait Review & Giveaway

Bebe au Lait nursing cover review & giveaway

I’ve had 3 babies and #4 is on the way so I’ve done my fair share of breastfeeding. With my first two, I used the old blanket over the shoulder routine. It works but it’s annoying and you have to switch sides and if you have a baby that moves you can bet that they blanket will be ripped away from you. Baby #3 I decided to look into nursing covers and I feel in love. Nursing covers are a bit like a huge bib but they are amazing for breastfeeding.
Bebe au Lait nursing cover review & giveaway

Bebe au Lait is one of the original nursing cover companies and they’ve definitely perfected this breastfeeding must-have!

Reasons I love Bebe au Lait

Bebe au Lait nursing cover review & giveawayRigiflex Neckline – allows you to see the baby and allows ventilation.

Style Selection – there are over 20 designer patterns to choose from in the Bebe au Lait Line.

Lots of Fabric – There are a lot of similar nursing covers but I’ve found many that do not offer enough coverage for my liking. Bebe au Lait gives a lot of fabric to cover up with.
Bebe au Lait nursing cover review & giveaway
Easy to Adjust – The simple d-ring neck adjustment makes getting that perfect fit very easy.

Pockets – Pockets on a nursing cover seemed odd to me at first but I can see how handy it can be during breastfeeding. There are two internal pockets sewn on the inside of the cover. These pockets can be sued to hold an essentials like burp clothes and pacifiers and since it’s made of 100% cotton terry the pockets serve a dual purpose for any cleaning up that is needed after a nursing session.
Bebe au Lait nursing cover review & giveaway

100% Cotton – I love natural fabrics and I know how hot a synthetic nursing cover can get so knowing that Bebe au Lait is 100% cotton is a huge plus!

I was given a Bebe au Lait nursing cover in Chateau Silver (which seems to no longer be available but that’s because they need to make room for some NEW designs) and I absolutely love it. I know I’ll be getting a lot of use out of it when baby #4 finally decides to arrive.

Buy It:
You can find Bebe au Lait’s nursing covers on their site for $35-$38

Win It:
Bebe au Lait has graciously supplied a Bebe au Lait nursing cover in your style choice for one of you to win!

Bumps to Babies: Undercover Mama Review & Giveaway

When I was nursing little man, I always felt self-conscious when others were around. I felt like even if I was covered, my stomach or back was still being exposed. I tried buying a few nursing tank tops, but none of them were long enough to completely cover my long waist! At the same time though, I knew I couldn't afford a whole new nursing wardrobe and I just felt stuck with what I had.

This time around, as I am getting ready to prepare for nursing baby #2, I knew that I wanted to invest in a few key pieces that would make nursing an easier experience. I know that again, I can't go out and buy a brand new wardrobe of nursing tops, but I need something! I recently came across Undercover Mama and was immediately drawn to their smart design that is made to work with any bra and any top.

Undercover Mama has designed the perfect addition to a nursing wardrobe. All you need is a nursing bra and a top! You simply attach the nursing top to your bra and it acts as a layered tank top under your shirt. Voila! Your top is now a discreet nursing top!

The Undercover Mama nursing tops attach with either a loop or a hook. (For more detail you can go to their website and they have some great You Tube videos on how to attach the loops and hooks to your bra)

The loop attachment

I chose the nursing top in cream and it is a lovely color! It will layer perfectly under my tops and I like that it is a bit warmer in color. I am so happy that the Undercover Mama nursing tops are nice and long! That was my biggest struggle when hunting for nursing tank tops when I nursed little man and I felt like I was constantly battling my top and tugging at it (cute, I'm sure).  They also come is a nice variety of colors, so you are sure to find the perfect shade to coordinate with any tops in your wardrobe! It is definitely nice to have the flexibility of a nursing top that can go with any of my shirts. I am really looking forward to having some of my more stylish shirts do double duty as a cute top and as a modest nursing top! I would love to add a few more colors of the Undercover Mama nursing tops to my wardrobe - I really like Black and Emerald!

Bumps to Babies: GroVia Review & Giveaway

GroVia Review & Giveaway

I am a cloth diapering mama. I didn’t start out that way; I didn’t get into the world of cloth diapers until baby #3 but oh how I wish I had started with baby #1!!! In any case, I am now fully entranced with this “fluffy” world and that is why I am so excited to share with you one of my favorite cloth diaper companies!

GroVia as I said, is one of my favorite cloth diaper companies. GroVia makes quite a few diapers and products now but my vote is for their Hybrid AI2. The Hybrid is now my “bulletproof” diaper meaning I really do not have any thing about this diaper that I do not like! Seriously, it is the diaper that I recommend to all my cloth diaper friends.

Reasons I love the GroVia Hybrid Cloth Diaper

GroVia GiveawayHybrid/AI2 – This means that I can reuse the shell so long as it’s not dirty. All I need to do is simply replace the inserts when changing a diaper. AI2’s also mean less laundry (you only need lots of inserts and not necessarily lots of diapers) and since the inserts are removable, they dry faster. Less laundry time!

Hook and Loop (aka “Velcro”) or Snaps – You have a choice. I love the hook and loop because I can get just the right fit and GroVia’s hook and loop system is uniquely soft and not harsh like traditional hook and loop. However snaps come in handy when you have a toddler who has learned to take off their diaper. Did you decide to buy all hook and loop and now you realize that you should have gone with snaps? Never fear, GroVia can convert all those hook and loops to snaps!

Insert Options – The cloth inserts snap in to the shells, which is wonderful because they do not move around like some inserts do. The cloth inserts also have waterproof backing that helps prevent leaks and helps keep that reusable shell clean. GroVia makes two cloth inserts: an Organic Cotton Soaker Pad and a Stay Dry Soaker Pad. I am all about having only natural fibers against my baby’s bum so I love that GroVia has an organic option! There is also a biodegradable insert, which is great for road trips, daycares, or for when you just don’t want to do laundry!

GroVia Giveaway
Adjustable Absorbency – Got a heavy wetter? No problem! GroVia makes Boosters, which can be added to your diaper so that you get more absorbency. The boosters are a must have for my daughter during naps and bedtimes now that she’s older. The boosters are also available in the Stay Dry option or the Organic Cotton option.

Waterproof Shells – Not all shells are waterproof. Why, is beyond me as it just seems logical to make all shells waterproof. However, GroVia shells are waterproof. They have a mesh inside with a water resistant polyester TPU outside (TPU which stands for Thermoplastic Polyurethane is a waterproof material that is heat bonded onto fabric. TPU is softer than the more common PLU waterproof material that many diapers use.)

GroVia GiveawayOne Size – GroVia hybrids will fit your child from 8 – 30 lbs! Now I will admit that a GroVia on a newborn looks very different from a GroVia on a toddler, as they are definitely bulkier on a newborn. However, they do work on a baby, which I personally love because one size means I do not constantly have to “upgrade” as my baby grows bigger.

Absolutely Adorable – GroVia diapers come in quite a few colors and patterns. This actually might be my only “con” to GroVia simply because it means I keep wanting to buy new shells! From Peacocks to Robots, from Cloud Gray to Blackberry Purple GroVia is sure to have diapers that will have your baby looking good!

Fit – GroVia’s Hybrids really do have a great fit. As far as AI2’s go, GroVia is one of the trimmest out there! Nice elastic in the legs for a snug fit.

Like I said, GroVia Hybrids really are my go-to, bulletproof diaper. My daughter wears them night and day.

GroVia GiveawayBuy It:
In addition to the Hybrid, GroVia also makes other diapers and products such as an AIO Diaper, Newborn AIO My Choice Trainers, Wetbags, Magic Sticks, Cloth Wipes, as well as some new products such as Kiwi Pie One Size Fitted Diapers, Kiwi Pie Pull On Wool Covers, and Prefolds!

Win It:
GroVia has offered to let one of you win a GroViaMagic Stick. This is such a great cloth diaper accessory to have! The GroVia Magic Stick is an all-natural diaper ointment that is safe for cloth or disposable diapers. Nothing but all natural ingredients contained in one handy stick so you can apply that diaper ointment with no mess!

Bumps to Babies: Moby Wrap Review & Giveaway

moby wrap giveaway

Did you know that they refer to a baby’s first 3 months outside the womb as the “Fourth Trimester”? This simply means that babies need a few months to slowly adjust to life outside. Can you blame them? Going from a nice, warm, comfortable place to a bright, cold, loud place… I probably wouldn’t enjoy it much either.

Parents can help ease this transition during the fourth trimester by wearing their babies. Wearing your baby will keep them warm, close to you, they can hear your heartbeat, smell your unique scent, and you can comfort them easily.
moby wrap giveaway

moby wrap giveawayThis is where a wrap such as the Moby Wrap comes in. You could of course carry your baby in your arms everywhere, but this is hard to do, not always practical, and not always in an overly cradling position. When you use a wrap, your baby is snuggled up right next to you, warm, and yet you can still use your hands and get things done (not to mention it’s not going to wear out your arms like holding a baby for all that time would…babies are light but after a few hours your arms will disagree).

Moby Wraps are amazing. Who knew a simple piece of fabric could work so well to hold your baby?

Here are some of the amazing things about a Moby Wrap:
moby wrap giveaway
Are best for infants but Moby says they will hold all the way up to 35 lbs.

Lots and lots of fabric. This means it will fit most anyone and you can try many different carry options.

Machine washable.

One size so anyone can use it!

Great detailed instruction booklet that helps you with the different carry options.

Made of 100% cotton, which is nice and soft.

Lots of colors, prints, UV’s, organic, etc.

There is a bit of a learning curve to using a wrap but once you get the hang of it, you will love how close and snug it keeps your baby.

Buy It:
Moby Wrap offers wraps on their site in their original line and modern line ($47.95), design line ($55.95), UV line and print line ($52.95) organic line and MLB Edition line ($62.95) and Dolcino Woven line ($125-140)

Bumps to Babies: Udder Covers Review & Giveaway

When I had my first son, I didn't use a breastfeeding cover. When nursing at home, I would just nurse him and if people were over, I would usually go in another room. If we were out, I would just try to find somewhere private or use a blanket to cover up with. Not the easiest thing to do! It also didn't make things very easy or comfortable for me and I usually felt like I was fumbling around trying to get my make-shift cover to stay put. I didn't know much about nursing or some of the newer "modern conveniences" that could make nursing more discreet in public. This time around, with baby boy #2, I feel like I am learning more and getting myself prepared!

Udder Covers is company that is "committed to making the most dependable nursing cover on the market." Their goal is to provide mothers with a cover that will allow for eye contact with your baby and help you to feel confident while nursing- wherever and whenever you need to. They have six designs that come in a variety of stylish prints. You are sure to find the perfect one to fit your personality!

All of the Udder Cover nursing covers are machine washable and designed with:
  • A rigid neckline, so you can make direct contact with your baby
  • 100% breathable cotton
  • Stainless steel d-rings, so you can adjust the cover to the perfect height
  • Generous sizing to keep you covered

On the Udder Covers site, you can buy the covers individually, or you can purchase their 3 piece Gift Set (perfect for a baby shower or new mommy gift!) that comes with an Udder Covers nursing cover, a coordinating Milk Bands breastfeeding bracelet and a 4-pack or Udder Covers breast pads.

Udder Covers generously sent me the Jones Gift Set! I love the color and pattern used on the Jones nursing cover! The fabric color is even better that I thought it would be. The description online says that it is a blue and cream nursing cover, but I think it is a bit more pale yellow and gray. It matches perfectly with our new nursery colors! The fabric weight is just right too. I didn't want anything that was too heavy and dark that would make our little boy sweaty or uncomfortable, since most of the year it is very warm here. The nursing cover is perfect - it lets light through and it seems very breathable.

The gift set also came with a blue Milk Bands breastfeeding bracelet. I had never seen one of these before! It is a bracelet that helps you keep track of what side you last nursed from, what time you last nursed and how long your little one nursed for! This is exactly what I needed when I was nursing little man! For the first few weeks, I had such a hard time remembering what side I last nursed on or for how long (probably due to lack of sleep). I was always writing myself notes on pieces of scratch paper to try to keep track, which just didn't work out so well. I think that the Milk Bands are a great tool to help tired, busy moms keep track of nursing and it is right there on your wrist!

The gift set also came with a 2 sets of Udder Covers re-usable breast pads. They are made of soft, 5 ply, 100% cotton and are made to draw moisture away from your body and help keep you dry. Washable nursing pads are yet another item that I didn't know about when I was nursing my first son! I hate to think about how much money I literally threw away with disposable nursing pads. The Udder Cover breast pads are soft and I know that they will be just what I need, day or night, to help keep me from leaking when baby #2 is here!

Interested in having an Udder Cover to use when nursing your little one? Looking for a Gift Set for a baby shower gift? You can BUY the Udder Covers Nursing Covers and Gift Sets directly from the Udder Covers website. (Nursing cover ARV $34.95 and Gift Set ARV $49.85)

My Pregnancy Journal: 36 Weeks

Happenings of the Harper Household

I've been linking up with the “My Pregnancy Journal” meme over at Happenings of the Harper Household. She has since had her little girl (Yay!), but I still wanted to continue to keep a pregnancy journal. I'm excited to keep  sharing and journaling some of my weekly symptoms and photographing my growing belly!

  36 Weeks!

Why yes, I did swallow a watermelon seed about 8 months ago! Haha! ;) So, supposedly, at 36 weeks, our baby still weighs approximately 4.2 pounds to 5.8 pounds and measures about 17.2 to 18.7 inches. Hmmm... I have the feeling he may be a bit bigger than that. Little man was born at 38 weeks and was 7lbs 14oz. At 36 weeks, our little guy is getting closer to being able to breathe on his own, his liver and kidneys are working and his skin is smoothing out. Also, our little guy's circulation and immune systems are just about ready for life on the outside.

About me & baby boy this week….
Symptoms:  I have been having a return of my 1st trimester friend- nausea. Blech! I have been getting nauseous in the mornings and evenings. It doesn't seem to matter if I eat a lot or not, it seems to find me either way. Tea and eating something simple like a banana seem to help. I didn't experience this at all with little man, so this was a surprise. Frequent trips to the bathroom are still my norm, which definitely affects my ability to sleep at night. On a positive not, going to the chiropractor has really helped! The days that I went to the chiropractor, I slept so much better at night. Oh and I have a flat belly button too! It does look like it might head into the "outie" direction soon!

Weight Gain: I am up to 162.1lbs - adding 37.1lbs onto my starting weight!

Cravings: Not really any strong cravings.

Food Aversions: No food aversions either.
What made me cry this week:  I think I did pretty good this week! :) We had a fun week!

Medical Stuff: We went back to the midwife this week. I really like going every week! I did get the results of my GBS test, which were positive. Bummer. *sigh* I was pretty disappointed, since all of my other test results were so good and healthy. But, there was a silver lining. I can continue to take the vitamin C and zinc supplements and use a cleansing wash. Then, if I test negative for GBS 2 times before our little guy's birth, I don't have to have the IV antibiotics. If I still test positive, then I will be taking the IV antibiotics, but I'll only need a 20 min IV drip every 4-6 hours. So, I'll only need a port for the IV and I'll still have the freedom to move around and get in the tub. So, I was feeling a bit down about that, but I'm glad that there are still options and that I'll have the freedom to move around. I also am starting to take Evening Primrose Oil 3x a day, which is supposed to soften the cervix.

Thoughts from little man:  Little man was so cute this week, he was talking about how his little brother is going to be his little friend when he is born! So sweet! He has also been talking about bellies and babies a lot- everyone with a belly must be having a baby! He will pat his belly and say that there's a baby in there or claim that there is a baby in daddy's belly. Haha! I love it!

Something I am excited about: We're all done with our Bradley method classes, which I really enjoyed! I am also looking forward to my weekly visits with the midwives. Then there is the baby's nursery...that we still need to work on! Oh my! Sometimes I don't think we will get it all done, but I am excited to work on it!

Bumps to Babies: SwaddleDesigns Organic Fitted Crib Sheet Review & Giveaway

Babies spend quite a bit of their time sleeping (or is it just napping?) and it is so important that their sleeping environment be free from chemicals. One easy place that you can eliminate extra toxins from is their bedding, which comes in direct contact with their skin. It is really important to me that things like mattresses and bedding be organic. It helps put my mind at ease knowing that the cotton that makes up our little ones bedding wasn't sprayed with chemicals before being made into sheets!

I have really been looking forward to is getting our new little ones nursery ready! A nursery just wouldn't be the same without a crib and of course a crib mattress and crib sheets! Now, we already have an organic mattress and next on my list was to find some organic fitted crib sheets. I discovered SwaddleDesigns and their wonderful Organic Fitted Crib Sheets!

SwaddleDesigns is actually best known for their Ultimate Receiving Blanket. This popular blanket is quite a bit larger than the typical receiving blanket and being square in shape, it is perfect for swaddling! SwaddleDesigns has thought of everything and this is actually the only blanket with swaddling instructions sewn to its edge (patent pending). This would have been so helpful to have had with our first son! We were always forgetting how to swaddle him!

SwaddleDesigns offer two types of fabric for swaddling: Flannel and Marquisette.
  • Flannel is the #1 Choice in US hospitals for swaddling babies, because it is thin, lightweight, breathable, but not too thick. Cotton flannel is appropriate for cooler to moderate weather.
  • They also offer a very lightweight open weave cotton Marquisette Swaddling Blanket which is appropriate for warmer climates.

The Organic Fitted Crib Sheets are made from the same buttery soft, lightweight and breathable cotton flannel as the Ultimate Receiving Blankets, and they are made right here in the USA, in Seattle,WA! I received the Organic Fitted Crib Sheet in the Pastel Blue Mod Circles on Ivory print.

I absolutely love how cozy and soft the fitted crib sheet is! It is the perfect material for a little baby to snuggle up against! The cotton flannel is nice for the cooler fall and winter weather that we will be having, yet the material seems breathable enough for warmer spring and summer days. SwaddleDesigns also used elastic around entire bottom edge, which gives the fitted sheet a nice secure and safe fit around our crib mattress.

Interested in having a SwaddleDesigns Organic Fitted Crib Sheet for your little ones crib? You can BUY the Organic Fitted Crib Sheet directly from the Swaddle Designs website. (ARV $44)
